Prononc.:[]. Étymol. et Hist. 1966 belgicisme « maillot de corps » (Livret militaire ds Lang. et cultures, Mél. offerts à Willy Bal, I, 2, p. 37); cf. 1976 (La Libre Belgique, 27 oct., p. 7, ibid., p. 42). Belgicisme lui-même empr. à l'angl. singlet « vêtement non doublé en laine (tricoté ou tissé) que l'on porte maintenant habituellement ajusté et comme sous-vêtement ou chandail » (dep. 1746, NED). Le mot apparaît en France dans un texte de 1938 que cite A. GOOSSE (ds Lang. et cultures, Mél. offerts à Willy Bal, I, 2, p. 42) et où il est utilisé entre guillemets: ici aussi il s'agit prob. d'un empr. à l'angl. singlet. Harrap's 1968, s.v. singlet, signale ,,(in Fr.[ench]) gilet de flanelle``. L'angl. singlet est comp. de single au sens de « non doublé (en parlant de vêtements) » — sens actuellement disparu — et du suff. -et sur le modèle de doublet « pourpoint, doublet » (v. doublet étymol. 1).
